Week of January 7 - 11
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful break! While scholars are continuing to work on their projects for Project Week, please keep in mind each project has a rubric, which follows what should be included, AND each project has a Language Arts component, some with its own rubric. For example, the Science-"How Things Work" Project, requires a 4-8 paragraph report in order to receive a score of 4 on the rubric. Please be sure your scholar is ready to turn in a completed project Monday morning.
Further guidance and rubrics can be found on the Project Week Website.
https://sites.google.com/a/juliancharterschool.org/project-week-2014/
Please make sure to go back to this site and follow the rubric and instructions for your particular projects.
On Tuesday the 15th, at 8:45-9:45, PLC will have a Project Week exhibition, where you are invited to view the projects that our scholars have created. Please make sure to supervise any young children and remind them to please not touch any of the projects, unless informed to do so, as we do not want to ruin anyone's hard work. Thank you!
I am looking forward to seeing everyone back at school Monday morning! Have a great rest of the week and a wonderful weekend!
Week of November 12 - 16
I hope you are ready for a wonderful week off with your amazing scholars! I sent home report cards yesterday in homework folders and was happy to give them just a history assignment for their homeschool work. We have been having in-depth discussions about the Age of Exploration over the past couple of weeks and I look forward to what they will learn and share about their Explorers! Please encourage your scholars to read and work on their Khan missions during the break, but... this week should mostly be about family, relaxation, and gratitude! I am grateful to be your scholars teacher and to have the support of wonderful PLC families like you! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of their education! Have a wonderful break!
Week of October 8- 10
Just a reminder that Math Club is tomorrow after school and ends at 3:45! Please send your scholar with an extra snack to have after school and let me know, or remind me again, if your scholar plans to attend.
Tomorrow is also Crazy Hair/Hat Day! Be creative, but allow your scholar to have a successful and productive day!
Our middle school leadership team has reminded us that "We Scare Hunger" is happening throughout October. Donations can be made by the bottom stairs near the front entrance. Items being collected include:
Scholar led Conferences start next Thursday, so please remember that day is a homeschool day. Homeschool material will be given out on Wednesday for both 10/18 and 10/19 homeschool days. Your scholar is looking forward to sharing their work and goals with you! Please remember to sign up for a conference and to check the date you sign up for because I will not be available on Friday the 19th, so I have opened up other days to accommodate!
Have a wonderful day!
Week of October 3 - 5
Just a reminder that tomorrow and Friday are homeschool days! Your scholar is coming home with TWO days of homeschool assignments. They have been working really hard on revising and editing their rough drafts of their narrative writing and for homeschool they will be putting their finishing touches on their FINAL draft. They will need to complete the final Self/PEER Reflection, make any needed changes, print out the final copy, and create a title page with an illustration (paper provided).
The other writing task the scholars will be working on is their rough draft for their Tribe/Region informative writing piece. We worked on creating an outline in class, which relates to the task of proving the Big Idea big, "Geography Affects Patterns of Life". They will be using their outline and research to type their rough draft. Please have the scholars print this double-spaced! If you need me to print, please share a copy with me, so I can print before class starts on Monday.
Thank you all for your continued support! Have two productive homeschool days and a great weekend!
Week of September 24 - 28
We are excited to have you be a part of PLC’s student led conferences. Since it is student-driven, it may be different than other conferences you have attended.
Our philosophy is that student led conferences reflect the belief that students should be actively involved in their learning and assume responsibility for the learning process. Through the student led conference, students become more motivated, reflective and evaluative. They also become more critical in their approach to learning.
PLC’s Purpose for Student-Led Conferences:
• Students accept responsibility for learning and become more aware of the learning process.
• Students report academic growth to parents and progress toward becoming lifelong learners.
• Students learn the process of self-evaluation
• Students develop organizational and oral communication skills which in turn increases their self-confidence
What to Expect Grades 3-8:
Your grade 3-5 scholar will be bringing home a goal setting worksheet this week; goal-setting sheets already went home with scholars in grades 6-8. Please take some time to reflect on your child’s educational progress, and jot down what you feel your goals are for your child this year. Then, your scholar will complete what they feel are their goals for themselves this year. Have your scholar return the handout to their classroom teacher, so that teacher goals can be added.
During the conference expect your child to take us through how he/she is doing this year. They will talk about their short and long-term goals. The teacher will facilitate this conference and help guide your scholar through this process. Please know that the goals that the scholars set for themselves are indeed self-selected, BUT with teacher guidance and help.
After the conference, scholars will need your help in the guidance and facilitation of their own personal goals. This step is important in follow-through for your child. We will have periodic check-ins with how they are progressing toward these goals especially around report card time.
Grades K-8:
At the end of the year, scholars will participate in Scholarly Presentations that showcase their overall learning over the year.
You will be find that these student led conferences will
• Encourage students to take an active role in their learning
• Motivate students to take more ownership for their work
• Allow students to see their progress over time
• Encourage students to evaluate their work
• Encourage students, parents and teachers to openly communicate as equal partners about student achievement
• Enhance students’ oral communication skills
• Build students’ self-confidence
• Build relationships
• Press students to have a vision for their future
• Utilize students strengths, interests, and hobbies to garner higher student achievement
• Facilitate the development of students oral communication skills
• Encourage self-efficacy
We look forward to seeing you next week.
Week of September 4 - 7
Happy Friday! I hope everyone is having a productive homeschool day. I wanted to thank you and the scholars for making my birthday so special! I am sorry for not broadcasting it, but I have been so excited and busy planning and learning the 5th grade curriculum, I guess my birthday took a back seat! The following information is what I went over at Back to School Night. Please let me know if you have any questions.
First, I want to be able to share pictures of the scholars working hard and having fun and I have found the best way is through a Shutterfly Share Site. The site is password protected and is not a public site, so please email me letting me know if you do NOT want to join the site or do not want me to take pictures of your scholar. I will send an invitation next week!
Next, the field trips we have in the callendar are...
1. Riley's Farm on February 6th and 7th. This is an overnight field trip, where the scholars will be participating in a Revolutionary War Reenactment. Riley's farm is about 2 hours away and we leave PLC around 2pm on the 6th and will return to PLC around 4:30pm on the 7th. This field trip costs about $130 and we will need drivers and chaperones, also $130.
2. The other field trip is Biztown on March 11th. and this has a cost of $23 for each scholar. We will be needing lots of parents to help run Biztown (near SDSU) and arrive at the site 1.5 hours earlier to attend a mandatory training, then drive scholars back to PLC at the end of the day AND another set of drivers to just drive scholars to Biztown.
Both field trips are some of the all time favorites of PLC scholars and I am so excited to experience them with fresh eyes along with my class!
That is it for now. Thank you for those who have offered to help out in class! I will meet with the room parents and let them know what are some of the help priorities for the next few weeks. Have a great rest of the day and a relaxing weekend!
Week of August 27-31
Another awesome week! Please remember NO school on Monday and Back to School Night is Tuesday Sept. 4th! Have a productive homeschool day and a wonderful long weekend!
Week of August 20-24
What an incredible week! We squeezed so much into 4 days and we are so impressed with all of the hard work and participation from both classes.
Please check the Friday Homeschool Work tab in the upper right corner for this week's homeschool assignments and handouts. If you have any questions about homeschool, you may email your teacher on Friday anytime before 3:00pm. Both teachers discuss the assignments at length, in class on Thursdays, but we are more than happy to answer more specific questions regarding individual tasks.
Thank you again for a wonderful week and we look forward to learning and growing with your children this year!
